Fighting Skin Cancer with the Help of Omega 3's

newbeauty.com

So much of our lives (literally) revolve around the sun. From barbeques to picnics to sporting events, there are so many activities we enjoy that simply wouldn’t be any fun without it. But, while we love it, it does come with a cost—aging and skin cancer.

The good news is that researchers are always finding ways to help us enjoy some good old-fashioned sunshine and worry less about what will happen later on.

In fact, researchers at the University of Manchester in England found that you can boost your skin’s immunity to sun damage by taking omega-3 fish oils. It turns out that fish oil can also help enhance your body’s ability to fight skin cancer and infection.

“Although the changes we found when someone took the oil were small, they suggest that a continuous low level of chemoprevention from taking omega-3 could reduce the risk of skin cancer over an individual’s lifetime,” says lead study author Lesley Rhodes.

While all of this is good news, omega-3 can’t replace your sunscreen. It’s more of a sidekick—think of it as a Robin to sunscreen’s Batman.

5 Tips for Maintaining a Beautiful Smile

There is nothing more stunning that a set of pearly whites to go with a perfect smile.  Check out the article below from NewBeauty.com to learn the top 5 ways to keep your chompers in tip top shape.

www.NewBeauty.com
They are everywhere, even when you least expect them: stain-causers. Colored beverages, foods, medication and environmental factors can all turn your teeth from pearly white to dishwater gray or yellow. Here are a few who-would-have-thought ways to prevent teeth stains:
1. Don't chew ice.
"It creates microcracks in the tooth structure, which can absorb food stains more rapidly," says Atlanta cosmetic dentist Ronald E. Goldstein, DDS.

2. Chew sugarless gum.
Chewing leads to saliva production, which helps wash away food debris that can cause stains.

3. Take oral probiotics.
Unlike probiotics for digestive health, these probiotics are designed for the mouth. "They help the growth of normal flora in the mouth and disrupt the bad bacteria to limit staining, bad breath and inflammation," says Fort Lauderdale, FL, cosmetic dentist Nadja Horst, DMD.

4. Drink colored beverages through a straw.
Sending the liquid straight to the back of the mouth allows less time for it to touch your teeth and potentially stain them.

5. Snack on apples.Eating fresh apples can help keep your teeth bright. The malic acid in apples actually helps dissolve stains and clean teeth.

If the damage is already done and stains are present, professional bleaching with custom-made trays or light-accelerated teeth whitening can tackle most yellow stains.

New App Reveals The Toll Drinking Takes on Your Appearance

You've probably heard that smoking accelerates signs of aging, but there's another habit that can make you look older than you actually are - drinking. Unfortunately, some people may not be aware of the adverse affects alcohol can have on one's physical appearance, but the Scottish government is hoping to change that with the release of a new app that makes it painfully apparent what years of drinking can do to one's face, reports the Today Show.
The app or computer program is called the Drinking Mirror. Users can upload a picture of their face, enter the amount of alcohol they consume per week, and then receive a computer-generated image of what they may look like if they keep up the habit. According to the news source, individuals who peer into the Drinking Mirror may see an image of themselves looking heavier, with a wrinklier and ruddier face.
"Alcohol undoubtedly has an effect on our appearance in the short and long term. As well as causing bloating and dark circles under your eyes, alcohol dries out the skin and can lead to wrinkles and premature aging," Dr. Samantha Robson, a skin specialist, told The Daily Mail.
While quitting drinking may be able to slow down the early signs of aging that come with the habit, cessation may not be enough to undo the damage that's already evident. Fortunately, there are treatments available for people who are discouraged by facial wrinkles, whether they are caused by alcohol consumption, smoking or the natural aging process.
Botox is one option that has become quite popular in recent years. The injectable cosmetic can reduce the signs of aging by freezing the muscles that cause wrinkles around the mouth, eyes and forehead. Facelift surgery can also help restore a more youthful look to the face.

Is Your Workout Making You Look Older?

Frowning, smoking, gravity and the passage of time - all of these factors can contribute to signs of aging.  But is it possible that your workout regime is also making you look older than your years?  According to Shape Magazine, there may be some exercises that create less-than-appealing changes in the body.

Warning for runners
Have you heard of "runner's face?" Some people say that joggers may find that the activity has an impact on the elasticity of their skin. However, it's not the act of pounding the pavement that creates sagging skin, but the free-radical damage from an increased intake of oxygen that contributes to wrinkling, explained to the news source. However, studies have shown that it takes very strenuous exercise to increase cell damage, so jogging a few times a week isn't going to cause too much of a change in skin tautness.

Bouncing workouts and breasts

"High-impact exercise, like running and jumping rope, can contribute to premature sagging by stretching out the ligaments in your breasts," Sabrena Merrill a personal trainer told the news outlet. Fortunately, sports bras can help reduce the impact that such activities may have on one's breasts. If that's not enough, some women may choose to undergo a breast lift, which, according to the American Society for Aesthetic Plastic Surgery (ASAPS), can result in a "more youthful breast contour."

That dangerous sun

Fitness fanatics who love working out in the great outdoors put themselves at risk of sun damage, which can cause an array of skin problems, including premature wrinkling. That's why it's always important to wear sunscreen, even if you're going out for a jog in the winter. If the sun is out, it can negatively affect your skin, so make sure to slather on a lotion that has an SPF of 30 or higher when heading out for some fresh air.

Of course, hindsight is always twenty-twenty, so even if you start protecting your skin now, failing to do so in your younger years could mean that you have to deal with wrinkles on your face. Fortunately Botox injections and chemical peels can help treat these premature signs of aging to help your exterior match the youthfulness you feel on the inside.
